Design-Build Technical Director - Long Span and Complex Bridges

About the Role

We're seeking a senior structural engineer to expand our long-span and complex bridge practice and serve as the engineer of choice for our clients. In this key technical role, you will position our team to win and deliver major long-span and complex bridge projects across the U.S., engaging with clients, performing structural planning, analysis, and design, leading design teams, and providing construction support services. You may sign and seal contract documents, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations, and serve as Design Manager on select projects.

This role offers growth opportunities, including business development, client presentations, proposal preparation, cost estimating, contract negotiations, and overseeing project quality, schedule, and budget to ensure successful delivery from start to finish.

Responsibilities

• Represent Jacobs’ technical capabilities in long-span and complex bridges at industry events and client engagements.
• Serve as Technical/Task Lead on projects, including Design-Build, leading staff in engineering analysis, design, and development of contract documents for long-span and complex bridges.
• Sign and seal contract documents, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
• Establish work plans and multidisciplinary staffing for bridge projects, including assignment of project personnel.
• Plan, direct, and coordinate staff across multiple offices to ensure projects progress on schedule and within budget.
• Direct the activities of Project Engineers, Engineers, and Technicians, ensuring quality, efficient staff utilization, and upholding Jacobs’ reputation.
• Guide technical best practices and mentor junior engineers.
• Represent Jacobs at client/contractor meetings, presentations, and public hearings/reviews.
• Contribute to thought leadership through participation in technical committees and submissions to major bridge conferences.
• Support business development efforts, including client presentations, proposal preparation, cost estimating, and contract negotiations for major bridge pursuits.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in structural engineering or a related discipline.
• PE License with the ability to obtain licensure in multiple states; SE License is desirable.
• A minimum of fifteen years of professional experience, including Engineer of Record or Lead Engineer roles in final design, construction documents, and construction support services.
• Experience in one or more of the following technical specialisms:
  • Cable-stayed bridges
  • Arch bridges
  • Segmental bridges
  • In-water foundations
  • Erection engineering of cable-stayed bridges
  • Rehabilitation of complex steel bridges
  • Performance-based seismic design of bridges
• Proficiency with Design-Build and alternative delivery methods (e.g., Progressive Design/Build, P3, CM/GC).
• Proven technical leadership on complex bridges, leading multi-discipline design teams in developing final plans and specifications.
• Project or design management experience leading teams through design and construction phases.
• Established professional network within the client and contractor community.
• Recognized thought leadership in the long-span bridge marketplace.
• Solid understanding of design codes, specifications, and procedures for highway and rail/transit bridge structures.
• Demonstrated proficiency in one or more structural software tools: Midas, RM Bridge, CSiBridge, LARSA 4D, Sofistik.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $300,000. Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
