About the role

ABRAMS, the first U.S. publisher dedicated to art and illustrated books, is seeking a Design Intern to join the Adult Design Team for the Fall Internship Program beginning September 15, 2026. This unpaid, immersive program is offered for academic credit only and provides hands-on experience in book publishing, including real project contributions, professional development, and industry insight.

Responsibilities

  • Review passes and proofs with the design team
  • Edit text and format printer templates
  • Prepare paperback covers and advanced reader’s copies (ARCs)
  • Support the design team with general design tasks
  • Attend weekly design meetings with the department
  • Gain hands-on experience in book design, typography, layout development, and the overall book production process
  • Participate in learning and networking opportunities with ABRAMS employees and publishing professionals
  • Contribute ideas and creative input on department projects
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to learn about various areas of the publishing business
  • Engage in workshops and discussions on publishing trends and processes
  • Receive coaching, mentorship, and feedback from experienced professionals

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and eagerness to learn
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in publishing, particularly design
  • Keen eye for detail and ability to maintain accuracy in tasks
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Advanced typesetting skills
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited academic institution
  • Portfolio submission is required; applications without a portfolio will not be reviewed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior internship experience

Schedule

Hybrid schedule in New York, NY, requiring 21 hours per week from September 15, 2026, to December 18, 2026.
