About the role
This is an entry-level protection work position focused on learning and becoming certified in both Civil and Criminal enforcement within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Employees learn to transport prisoners from State, County, City, and courthouse institutions, provide protection for courthouses, judicial staff, and public safety for all judicial facilities, and maintain custody of prisoners during legal proceedings. Positions in this class serve in a training capacity, learning and pursuing certification in methods and techniques necessary to perform both criminal and civil enforcement, serve legal documents, and enforce laws as outlined in C.S. Title 18, C.S. Title 75, and Title 231. This work involves regular exposure to unpredictable conditions, and physical effort is frequently required. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher-level deputy sheriff.

Requirements
- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade (High School/GED)
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by any state prior to appointment
- Ability to physically perform the duties and work in the environmental conditions required of the position
Residency
Philadelphia residency is not required to submit an application; however, applicants must have established bona fide residency in the City of Philadelphia for one year prior to appointment.
Preferences
- Residency Preference: Candidates who have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year prior to the date of the civil service examination shall have priority over all other people receiving an identical test score.
- U.S. Veteran’s Preference: Ten points will be added to the scores of eligible veterans who are honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces. Spouses of disabled or deceased veterans may also be considered.
- Legacy Preference: Ten points for legacy preference will be added to the scores of the children and grandchildren of Philadelphia Firefighters or Police Officers who were killed or died in the line of duty.
- National Volunteer Service Preference: Up to five points will be added to the scores of eligible national volunteers who successfully completed a term of service with Peace Corps, AmeriCorps NCCC (including FEMA Corps), AmeriCorps VISTA, or AmeriCorps State and National.
- Philadelphia School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) Preference: Up to 5 points will be added to the final score of candidates who graduated from a CTE program of the School District of Philadelphia during the three-year period immediately preceding the examination announcement.
Exam Information
This is a Modified Training and Experience Evaluation. Approved applicants will receive a score of 70 and any additional preference points and be ranked on the eligible list. An Eligible List will be established the week of October 26, 2026. There is no test review for this evaluation.
