Typical Responsibilities
- On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
- Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
- Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, makes arrests.
- Testifies in court.
- Serves as court bailiff and prisoner guard.
- Reports unsafe conditions existing in the street or other public facilities.
- Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases.
- Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required.
- Performs Bailiff and court security duties as assigned.
- Prepares detailed reports.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.
- General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings.
- Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.
- Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.
- Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
- Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles.
- Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance.
Requirements
- Most have a current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification.
- Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
Special Requirements
- Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, which includes holidays and weekends.
