Deputy Sheriff II (Part-Time)

This recruitment is for part-time Deputy Sheriff II vacancies within the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. Positions may be placed in any division based on department needs.

About the Role

This is a part-time, per diem position. Potential new hires must pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, and background investigation as a condition of employment. The County covers the cost of the initial drug screen and physical.

Responsibilities

• Patrol County areas, enforce laws, and respond to calls to preserve peace and improve community safety.
• Arrest and search suspects; render assistance; gather statements and evidence.
• Conduct investigations of crimes, complaints, and criminal violations, including coroner’s investigations to determine cause of death.
• Supervise inmates in detention facilities and serve as a bailiff in court, ensuring security and order.
• Perform coroner duties, including inspecting bodies, identifying decedents, notifying next of kin, and protecting deceased persons' property.
• Act as a liaison with federal, state, and local agencies; address public groups on community service programs.
• Serve and execute civil processes and patrol county waterways in boats to investigate law violations and accidents.
• Testify at hearings and trials and prepare incident, arrest, and investigation reports.
• Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as required.

Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following patterns:

• Pattern I: One year of experience as a Deputy Sheriff I–Academy Certified in San Joaquin County.
• Pattern II: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED, or a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution, plus one year of paid experience as a fully sworn peace officer in a California POST Certified Law Enforcement Agency.

Additional requirements:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
• Possession of a valid POST Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
• Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment.
• Meet minimum standards for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code.
• Pass a background investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Department.
• Meet physical standards established for safety members.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Mobility: Frequent data entry, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, driving, running, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing, crawling; ability to drag 5 to 165 lbs.
• Lifting: Frequently lift 5 to 75 lbs; occasional lifting/turning of heavy objects or people.
• Visual: Constant good overall vision, reading/close-up work, color perception, eye/hand coordination, depth perception, and field/peripheral vision.
• Dexterity: Frequent reaching, grasping, repetitive motion, and writing.
• Hearing/Talking: Frequent hearing of normal speech, telephone/radio communication, and in-person conversations; ability to hear faint sounds.
• Emotional/Psychological: Constant decision-making, concentration, public contact, and public speaking; dealing with emergency situations, trauma, grief, death, and hazardous materials; occasional exposure to working alone.

Pay

Approximate salary: $48.02 - $58.37/hour.
