About the role
This recruitment fills Deputy Sheriff II opportunities in the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office and establishes an eligible list for future vacancies.
Responsibilities
- Patrol County areas; enforce laws; check homes, businesses, schools, and other locations for crime, suspicious circumstances, and hazardous conditions.
- Operate electronic communication equipment; respond to calls to preserve peace and enforce laws.
- Arrest and conduct searches of suspects; render assistance; obtain statements and information; mark, preserve, and process evidence.
- Conduct investigations of crimes, complaints, and criminal violations; perform coroner’s investigations to determine circumstances, manner, and cause of death; gather and protect evidence; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Supervise inmates in detention facilities; serve as bailiff to maintain courtroom security and order; transport inmates to and from courts and other locations.
- Perform coroner duties: inspect bodies in traumatic or unexpected deaths, identify decedents, notify next of kin, and protect property of deceased persons.
- Act as liaison with federal, state, and local agencies; address public and private groups on community service programs (e.g., neighborhood watch).
- Serve and execute civil processes; patrol waterways in boats; investigate law violations and accidents; issue citations and make arrests.
- Testify at hearings and trials; prepare incident, arrest, investigation, and related reports.
- Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Requirements
Knowledge
- Law enforcement practices, procedures, and resources.
- Federal, state, and County laws and ordinances related to general law enforcement.
- Patrol and investigative practices and techniques; departmental policies and procedures.
- Principles and methods of interviewing and interrogation; sociological concepts and communication skills for diverse populations.
- Self-defense tactics; laws governing evidence preservation; personal identification methods in law enforcement.

- First aid, CPR, and firearms use and care; police report writing techniques.
- Basic computer and office automation technology, including pertinent software programs.

- Work effectively with prisoners, fellow officers, public officials, and the general public.

- Work different shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended schedules; wear required safety equipment.
- Safely operate emergency response vehicles; operate and care for specialized law enforcement equipment, including firearms and restraints.
- Operate electronic communication equipment and basic computer hardware and software.

- Deferred Compensation: Plan under IRS Section 457; annual contribution limit of $18,000 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less). Individuals age 50+ may contribute up to $24,000. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
- Vacation:
- Up to 3 years: 10 days/year
- After 3 years: 15 days/year
- After 10 years: 20 days/year
- After 20 years: 23 days/year
- Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.
- Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation. Eligible for 8 hours administrative leave if leave balance equals at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll the entire calendar year.
- Bereavement Leave: 3 days paid leave for death of an immediate family member; 2 additional days if travel exceeds 300 miles each way.
- Merit Salary Increase: New employees start at the first step of the salary range. After 52 weeks (2,080 hours) on each step, eligible for merit increase to the next step.
- P.O.S.T. Pay:
- Intermediate POST certificate: 3% of base salary bi-weekly.
- Advanced POST certificate: 10% of base salary bi-weekly.
- Advanced POST + 15 years of service: 12.5% of base salary bi-weekly.
- Advanced POST + 24 years of service: 15% of base salary bi-weekly.
- Additional Compensation:
- Field or Custody Training Officer (FTO): 5% base salary supplement.
- Detective Bureau assignment: 5% base salary supplement.
- Tactical or Explosive Ordnance Teams (non-Detective/FTO): 5% base salary supplement.
