About the role

This recruitment fills current opportunities and establishes an eligible list for future vacancies. All correspondence will be delivered via email or US Mail.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol County areas, interact with the public to prevent and resolve issues, gain compliance, and build trust.
  • Enforce laws; check homes, businesses, schools, and other areas for crime, suspicious circumstances, and hazardous conditions.
  • Operate electronic communication equipment; respond to calls to preserve peace and enforce laws.
  • Determine appropriate courses of action in potentially violent situations; apprehend suspects and render assistance.
  • Conduct investigations of complaints and criminal violations; gather, maintain, and protect evidence; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Supervise inmates in detention facilities; serve as court bailiff, ensuring security and order in courtrooms.
  • Serve and execute civil process; patrol waterways, respond to law violations and accidents, issue citations, and make arrests.
  • Testify at hearings and trials; prepare incident, arrest, investigation, and related reports.
  • Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as required.

Requirements

Knowledge

  • Law enforcement practices, procedures, and resources.
  • Federal, state, and County laws and ordinances related to general law enforcement.
  • Patrol and investigative practices and techniques; departmental policies and procedures.
  • Principles and methods of interviewing and interrogation; sociological concepts and communication skills for diverse populations.
  • Self-defense tactics; procedures and laws governing evidence preservation.
  • Methods of personal identification; principles of human behavior; community resources.
  • Public relations techniques; first aid and CPR; use and care of firearms.
  • Police report writing techniques; basic computer and office automation technology.

Abilities

  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Enforce laws and evaluate situations to determine appropriate actions.
  • Be honest and tactful in various situations; obtain information through interviews and observations.
  • Record observations clearly and accurately; relate to diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Physically restrain or subdue suspects; follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Work effectively with inmates, officers, public officials, and the general public.
  • Apply proper arrest and restraint techniques; work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended schedules.
  • Operate emergency response vehicles and specialized law enforcement equipment, including firearms and restraints.
  • Operate electronic communications equipment and basic computer hardware/software.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Mobility: Frequent data entry, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, driving, running, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing, crawling; drag 5 to 165 lbs.
  • Lifting: Frequently 5 to 75 lbs; occasional lifting/turning of heavy objects or people.
  • Visual: Constant good overall vision, reading/close-up work, color perception, eye/hand coordination, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
  • Dexterity: Frequent reaching, grasping, repetitive motion, writing.
  • Hearing/Talking: Frequent hearing of normal speech, telephone/radio use, in-person communication; ability to hear faint sounds.
  • Emotional/Psychological: Constant decision-making, concentration, public contact, public speaking; dealing with emergencies, trauma, grief, death, and hazardous materials; occasional exposure to working alone.
  • Special Requirements: Wear assigned safety equipment; work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended schedules.
  • Environmental: Frequent exposure to noise and varied weather conditions.

Pay

Approximate salary: $7,547.90 - $9,174.52 per month.

Additional compensation for:

  • Intermediate POST certificate: 3% of base salary bi-weekly.
  • Advanced POST certificate: 10% of base salary bi-weekly.
  • Advanced POST certificate + 15 years of service: 12.5% of base salary bi-weekly.
  • Advanced POST certificate + 24 years of service: 15% of base salary bi-weekly.
  • Field or Custody Training Officer (FTO): 5% of base salary.
  • Detective Bureaus: 5% of base salary.
  • Tactical or Explosive Ordnance Teams: 5% of base salary (if not receiving Detective or FTO supplements).
  • Boating Safety: 5% of base salary.
  • Bilingual proficiency: 5% of base salary bi-weekly.

Uniform allowance: $400 lump sum for new uniforms; $1,100 annual allowance (increasing to $1,200 after 2009).

  • Life Insurance:
    • 1 but less than 3 years of service: $1,000.
    • 3 but less than 5 years of service: $3,000.
    • 5 but less than 10 years of service: $5,000.
    • 10+ years of service: $10,000.
    • Regular employees: $40,000 County-paid term life insurance with double indemnity accidental death and dismemberment provision; option to purchase up to $200,000 additional coverage at group rate.
  • 125 Flexible Benefits Plan: Pre-tax dollars for health-related expenses ($2,550 annual limit with $500 carryover) and dependent care costs ($5,000 annual limit).
  • Retirement Plan: Covered by the County Retirement Act of 1937. Visit SJCERA for details.
  • Deferred Compensation: Section 457 plan with annual contribution limit of $18,000 ($24,000 for age 50+); Roth IRA option available.
  • Vacation: 10 days annually (up to 3 years), 15 days (after 3 years), 20 days (after 10 years), 23 days (after 20 years).
  • Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.
  • Sick Leave: 12 days annually with unlimited accumulation; 8 hours administrative leave for maintaining half of cumulative accrual.
  • Bereavement Leave: 3 days paid leave for immediate family; 2 additional days if travel exceeds 300 miles each way.
  • Merit Salary Increase: Eligible for step increase after 52 weeks (2080 hours) at each salary range step.

Schedule

Full-time position requiring work on different shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended schedules.
