Deputy Sheriff- FEMALE Only- Part Time

Performs routine protective services work in corrections, court services, or administrative divisions, including care and security of inmates, courthouse security, and related duties.

Responsibilities

Corrections

• Processes inmates into custody; searches prisoners, manages personal property, and provides clothing, bedding, and institutional rules.
• Conducts periodic security checks of inmates in assigned areas and maintains logs of inmate movement.
• Performs cell searches for contraband and reviews incoming and outgoing mail.
• Monitors individuals entering and leaving the jail and supervises cleaning details.
• Transports inmates and attends to their special needs.

Court Services

• Processes entrants through courthouse security checkpoints and conducts security checks of inmates in assigned areas.
• Maintains courtroom control to prevent disruptions and protects judges, officials, witnesses, and jurors.
• Supervises, escorts, transports, restrains, and controls prisoners.
• Processes prisoners, delayed confinement persons, and juveniles.
• Serves civil and criminal papers and performs interior and exterior security searches of the courthouse.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record.
• U.S. citizenship and minimum age of 21.
• Completion of minimum training standards required by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
• Successful completion of a criminal history background check.
• Ability to perform job duties as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in public or personal contact work, preferably related to law enforcement.

Skills

• General knowledge of civil and criminal law, court procedures, jail regulations, and prisoner care and custody.
• Ability to manage interpersonal relationships, follow oral and written instructions, and prepare records and reports.

Schedule

24-hour position with 12-hour shifts.
