Deputy Sheriff - Eligibility List

About the role

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Deputy Sheriff to maintain the most effective enforcement of Federal and State laws and ordinances for the preservation of public peace, protection of property, prevention of crime, and the arrest and conviction of violators.

Responsibilities

• Patrols county highways to enforce traffic laws, issues citations and summons, and investigates traffic accidents
• Investigates criminal activities such as homicide, robbery, sexual assaults, burglaries, thefts, etc.
• Completes written reports on all traffic law enforcement activities and criminal investigations
• Appears and testifies in court or other hearings on traffic cases and criminal proceedings
• Supervises inmates in County Jail, transports prisoners, and maintains jail security
• Responds to disturbances and altercations, and investigates as appropriate
• Assists in security and crowd control at events, and coordinates emergency responses
• Conducts Community Policing activities, including checking on the security of unoccupied buildings and public areas

Requirements

• Eligible for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board in 2026
• High School Diploma
• Must be 18 years of age and a U.S. Citizen
• Of good moral character, with no felony convictions unless pardoned by Governor, and no domestic abuse convictions
• Must hold a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a good driving record

Qualifications

• Ability to possess a firearm
• Good verbal and written communication skills, and clear and concise speech
• Ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations
• Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
• Ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment
• Prior experience as a law enforcement officer is preferred
• Vision correctable to 20/20
