Responsibilities
- Maintains security of residents within an assigned post.
- Makes random security inspections, checks resident well-being and behavior, pod windows, lighting, sanitation, equipment, and security devices.
- Documents any situation or occurrence inconsistent with routine operations using the appropriate form.
- Helps other deputies or calls for assistance for use of force incidents and follows department’s use of force policy.
- Supervises resident movement and activities.
- Performs resident transports to clinics, emergency rooms, courts, etc.
- Performs resident personal and cell searches as needed.
- Provides security in pods during feeding of residents.
- Provides information and aid to residents.
- Maintains records of and properly identifies persons entering and leaving facility.
- Secures outside perimeter of Richmond City Justice Center.
- Communicates with other posts or deputies via two-way radio.
- Helps the public and performs duties outlined in Standard Operating Procedures during resident visitation.
- Drives emergency vehicles under stressful conditions.
- Uses physical force to control and arrest law violators.
Qualifications
- At least 21 years old.
- A U.S. citizen.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- No felony convictions.
- No domestic violence offenses.
- Strong moral character as determined by the Applicant Screening Panel and background investigation.
- Fingerprinting and search of local, state, and national fingerprint files.
- Physical and mental fitness to handle dangerous situations.
- A valid Virginia driver’s license if currently licensed out of state.
- Extensive background investigation, credit history check, polygraph examination, and medical examination/drug screening.
- Completion of DCJS requirements for certification as a Deputy Sheriff within one year of hire date.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
- Qualification with firearms and other defensive weapons.
