Description

Under general supervision is responsible for patrolling an assigned district and responding to calls for service; may be assigned to the jail; performs other duties as required.

Duties

  • Responds to a wide variety of citizen calls for service, including calls to public schools, which demand a wide variety of actions;
  • Identifies and addresses motor vehicle traffic flow and safety problems;
  • Identifies and addresses crime patterns on applicable cruiser district(s);
  • Investigates, reports, and properly clears traffic accidents;
  • Communicates with the public, peers, supervisors, and other units in oral and written form via radio, telephone, MDT, computer, and in person;
  • Intervenes in domestic disputes; serves arrest warrants and/or makes arrests; searches persons; transports prisoners and other people;
  • Identifies and collects evidence and preserves crime scenes; conducts stakeouts or surveillance, sometimes in plain clothes;
  • Writes accurate, complete, and legible reports; uses a computer to gather and disseminate information;
  • Handles, uses, and/or shoots firearms;
  • Operates a motor vehicle;
  • Maintains police vehicles and other equipment;
  • Follows court call-in procedures for subpoenas; appears and/or testifies in court;
  • Works with and makes referrals to other agencies;
  • Participates in meetings; works in administrative positions; attends training as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and car insurance.
  • Must have an O.P.O.T.A. Certification for Law Enforcement.

Supplemental Information

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of and ability to apply federal, state, and local laws, and regulations of the Sheriff's Office;
    • Able to communicate effectively both orally and written;
    • Able to respond effectively to irate citizens and inmates;
    • Able to conduct investigations;
    • Able to use a computer and prepare reports.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Works six 12-hour shifts and one 8-hour shift with rotating days off (Off Mon/Tue, on Wed/Thu, off Fri/Sat/Sun, on Mon/Tue, off Wed/Thu, on Fri/Sat/Sun...)
    • This is a uniformed patrol assignment, working outside, including in inclement weather, using a patrol vehicle as an office; may be required to work during other shifts; and may be assigned to the jail.

Required Questions

  • Do you have a current Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certificate or are you currently enrolled in an OPOTA certified peace officer training academy?
  • Have you ever knowingly provided false, misleading, or incomplete information during an employment or background investigation process?
  • Are you willing to fully and truthfully disclose all requested information during every stage of the hiring and background investigation process?
  • Have you ever resigned in lieu of discipline or been terminated from a position in law enforcement, corrections, or another criminal justice role?
  • Have you ever been convicted of a felony offense, or are you currently under indictment or criminal investigation?
  • Are you legally eligible to possess a firearm under federal and state law?
  • Have you complied with all court-ordered and legal financial obligations within the past five years including, but not limited to, Child Support / Alimony payments, Civil / Criminal / Traffic fines, and Federal / State Taxes as applicable?
  • Have you used or purchased any illegal drugs within the past five years, or marijuana/THC products (including any derivatives) within the past one year?
  • Do you currently possess a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance? To be considered a valid a license must be issued within the United States and have no open or current suspensions.
  • Have you had any DUI/OVI convictions within the past five years, more than one DUI/OVI conviction as an adult, or more than two convictions if one of the convictions was as a juvenile?
  • Are you able and willing to attend all required steps of the hiring process, including interviews, testing, background appointments, and communicate regularly through phone and/or email?
