About the role

The Deputy Sheriff is a journey-level classification responsible for various duties including processing calls, exercising authority, coordinating with other officers, and conducting investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Processes business and emergency calls and prepares crime and miscellaneous reports.
  • Exercises authority consistent with the oath of office.
  • Promptly obeys legitimate orders.
  • Coordinates efforts with other officers to achieve police objectives.
  • Communicates information pertinent to corrections objectives.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment in a functional condition.
  • Secures, receives, and transports evidence and property.
  • Conducts thorough investigations and collects evidence.
  • Remains alert for conditions that foster or indicate crime.
  • Responds to situations and renders first aid when qualified.
  • Communicates with prosecutors and testifies in court.
  • Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and courts.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and cooperation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Nevada POST Category I, II, III certification.
  • Valid Nevada driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of all streets and ways of the county.
  • Working knowledge of business English, business correspondence, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software for information creation, editing, and distribution.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, county ordinances, department rules, and relevant court rulings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially in dealing with the public.
  • Preparation of clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Effective communication, both verbal and written.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Basic accounting concepts and arithmetic.
  • Ability to use firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Physical requirements including strength, stamina, coordination, and balance for various tasks.

Schedule

Shift work with periodic changes is required. Positions are exposed to the stress of dealing with detainees, persons under the influence of alcohol and drugs, emotional individuals, and resistive and combative persons. Positions are also exposed to the stress of exposure to dangerous persons and circumstances including dead, injured, and sick individuals and to individuals with communicable diseases. Positions are exposed to the noise of firearms discharge often in close proximity.
