About the role

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is seeking applicants for a full-time Sworn Deputy to assist in the Patrol Division. Under occasional supervision, this role performs general law enforcement work in one of the major divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, including uniformed patrol, civil courts, and criminal investigations. Deputies are expected to protect lives, property, and the rights of citizens within Alamance County.

Schedule

This is an FLSA non-exempt position requiring 12-hour shifts, including holidays and weekends. The Patrol Division operates two permanent day shifts (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM) and two permanent night shifts (6:00 PM – 6:00 AM). Shift assignments are determined by Patrol Administration. Deputies are required to wear a uniform.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patrol duties in assigned areas of the county, responds to complaints and requests for assistance, investigates crimes and disturbances, interviews witnesses, questions suspects, gathers and preserves evidence, makes arrests, and testifies in court.
  • Provides patrol of highways and roadways to ensure safety and compliance with laws.
  • Serves civil papers, explains their meaning, conducts public auctions of personal and real property, and ensures proper collection of funds.
  • Opens and closes courts, maintains order in the courtroom, assists defendants with affidavits, seats defendants and juries, and escorts trial and grand juries.
  • Prepares and assists in the transportation of prisoners, escorts prisoners to court, maintains custody, and processes releases and property logs.
  • Cooperates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in investigations and arrests.
  • Provides protective escorts and maintains order at public gatherings and events.
  • Operates speed detection devices and breath analyzers as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains daily reports on criminal activity and other requested documentation.
  • Assists in crime prevention programs and develops community contacts with local organizations and businesses.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Currently certified as a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer (successfully passed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training-BLET).
  • Must successfully pass an oral interview, background check, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of law enforcement or patrol experience.
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and on-call hours.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

Duties may include challenging terrain, running, and lifting while working with a K9. The position requires interaction with administration, supervisors, court personnel, the public, and other members of the Sheriff’s Office.
