Deputy Office Director (Supervisory Statistician)

This position is being filled under a streamlined hiring authority (21 U.S. Code § 379d-3a) and will be appointed as career or career-conditional, paid under Title 21 Pay Table 2, Band F.

About the Role

The Deputy Office Director (Supervisory Statistician) serves within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Office of Product Evaluation and Quality (OPEQ). CDRH protects and promotes public health by ensuring timely access to safe, effective, and high-quality medical devices and radiation-emitting products, facilitating innovation through regulatory science, and providing transparent, efficient pathways for industry.

Requirements

Basic Qualification Requirements

• Degree: 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, with at least 6 semester hours in statistics), plus 9 additional semester hours in physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, engineering, or social sciences (e.g., demography, economics, sociology, psychology, public administration). Courses must include at least 50% statistical methods content.
• OR a combination of education and experience: courses as described above, plus professional statistical work such as sampling, data collection/analysis, and applying techniques like correlation, variance analysis, or significance testing.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) relevant experience in federal, state, local, private, or non-governmental sectors. Additionally, meet one of the following:

• Bachelor’s degree: 7 years of experience providing scientific and technical leadership for clinical evidence and analysis programs in medical device regulation, including oversight of clinical data reviews, real-world evidence, and regulatory submissions.
• Master’s degree: 6 years of comparable experience.
• Doctorate (PhD, J.D., MD, DO, DDS, DPM, or DVM): 4 years of comparable experience.
• No degree: 11 years of comparable experience.

Experience must demonstrate technical authority in clinical evidence evaluation, regulatory science, or engineering. Applicants must submit transcripts to verify education.
