Deputy Legal Counsel
About the role
The Deputy Legal Counsel with the Washington State Governor’s Office provides legal advice and strategic guidance to the Governor and Governor’s Office staff on a variety of complex legal and policy issues.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and input on matters involving healthcare, immigration, public safety, infrastructure, and other emerging issues.
- Brief the Governor and senior staff.
- Oversee litigation involving the Governor's Office and state agencies.
- Evaluate candidates for judicial appointments.
- Review State-Tribal compacts.
- Help manage the Governor's clemency process and public records responsibilities.
Requirements
An accomplished attorney with exceptional legal analysis, writing, and communication skills, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to public service is required.
Qualifications
A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Admission to the Washington State Bar Association is preferred.
Skills
Strong analytical, research, and writing skills are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
