About the role

This position oversees the daily operations of the suppression, rescue, EMS, and training divisions within the Fire Division. It involves planning, organizing, prioritizing, and directing the activities of the fire division to ensure operational effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, prioritize, and direct the activities of the fire division to ensure operational effectiveness;
  • Assist in researching, developing, writing, and presenting the annual division budget;
  • Write or assist in writing specifications for new apparatus, vehicles, equipment, and supplies;
  • Purchase new supplies, equipment and uniforms;
  • Make recommendations to the Fire Chief;
  • Control spending within the approved budget.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in fire administration or related field;
  • Over five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a fire officer including supervisory experience;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio vehicle operator’s license and remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy;
  • Must possess an Ohio Paramedic certification, Ohio Firefighter II fire training certificate, and Ohio Certified Fire Safety Inspector;
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, 250, 300, 400, 700, and 800;
  • Ohio Fire Executive or Executive Fire Officer is preferred.

Qualifications

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications stated above.

Skills

  • Knowledge of fire suppression and emergency medical methods;
  • Knowledge of fire and emergency response equipment operation and maintenance;
  • Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and to fire suppression and emergency medical activities;
  • Knowledge of fire codes and regulations;
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of agency goals and objectives;
  • Knowledge of agency policies and procedures;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency management, and emergency response programs;
  • Ability to deal with many variables and determine specific action;
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and discretion;
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers;
  • Ability to determine material and equipment needs;
  • Ability to compile and prepare reports;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
  • Ability to train or instruct others;
  • Ability to understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications;
  • Ability to resolve complaints;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;

  • Ability to apply management principles to solve agency problems.

Benefits

  • Health Benefits: Employees pay 15% of the monthly medical insurance premium through United Healthcare which includes prescription coverage. Employee, Employee plus child(ren), Employee plus spouse and family coverage is available. However, a spouse who has affordable health care coverage through their employer must elect that coverage as primary. The City health care plan is a high deductible healthcare plan.
  • Vision and Dental: The City pays 100% of the premium for dental and vision. Coverage levels will be explained in further detail at time of hire.
  • LIFE INSURANCE: The City pays 100% of the premium on a $100,000 life insurance policy for employee and $10,000 for spouse and $5,000 for child.
  • Retirement Pension: The City contributes 14% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System. The employee pension payment share is 10% of gross salary.
  • Vacation: New employees accrue two weeks of paid vacation every year. Vacation time increases with length of service time.
  • Personal Leave: Employees receive 6 prorated days of personal leave annually.
