Deputy ES&H Manager
Job Summary
The Deputy Project ES&H Manager serves as a key member of the project leadership team and acts on behalf of the Project ES&H Manager, as delegated. The position requires demonstrated experience operating within both OSHA-regulated construction environments and MSHA-regulated mining and mining-construction environments. Bechtel ES&H leadership roles are responsible for leading ES&H personnel, supporting project execution, ensuring regulatory compliance, driving performance improvement, and interacting with stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
Major Responsibilities
- Lead and support project ES&H programs and personnel.
- Ensure compliance with company, client, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Supervise, coach, and develop ES&H staff and field personnel.
- Conduct inspections, audits, assessments, and field observations.
- Identify hazards, manage risks, and exercise stop-work authority when necessary.
- Support incident investigations, corrective actions, and lessons learned.
- Oversee contractor and subcontractor ES&H performance.
- Integrate ES&H requirements into project planning and execution.
- Support emergency preparedness, response planning, and training programs.
- Monitor performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Build effective relationships with clients, regulators, and project stakeholders.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and risk mitigation.
Education And Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to environmental, safety, health or science-related discipline and 8 -10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
- Required Knowledge And Skills:
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing ES&H programs within OSHA-regulated construction environments and MSHA-regulated mining or mine-construction environments.
- Experience managing ES&H compliance for multiple contractors and subcontractors on large-scale construction projects.
- Experience leading significant incident investigations, corrective action programs, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Strong working knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, critical control management, contractor management systems, and ES&H management systems.
- Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills is preferable and advantageous.
