Deputy Editor, West Michigan
About the role
Bridge Michigan, Michigan's leading nonprofit newsroom, is seeking an ambitious, community-minded editor to lead our journalism in West Michigan. This newly created position will serve as Bridge Michigan's lead editor for West Michigan, overseeing regional coverage, helping shape editorial strategy and producing the West Michigan newsletter. The editor will also help coordinate the West Michigan Journalism Collaborative, a partnership among news organizations working to strengthen public-service journalism across the region.
Responsibilities
- Lead and shape Bridge Michigan's editorial strategy and journalism in West Michigan, including producing and overseeing the West Michigan newsletter
- Help coordinate regional journalism partnerships and the West Michigan Journalism Collaborative
- Build relationships with communities, civic institutions and journalism partners
- Use audience insights, community engagement and editorial performance data to help identify coverage priorities, reporting opportunities, emerging issues and opportunities to strengthen the reach and impact of our journalism
- Edit and strengthen accountability, enterprise and community-centered reporting
- Collaborate with audience, engagement, visual and multimedia teams
Requirements
- At least five years of editing and newsroom leadership experience
- An exceptional editor and story coach
- Understands accountability and public-service journalism
- Embraces audience-centered and multimedia journalism
- Leads collaboratively across teams and organizations
Qualifications
- Energized by newsletters, community engagement and innovation
Skills
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Experience with multimedia storytelling
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams
- Understanding of public service journalism
Benefits
Compensation: Salary range: $80,000–$95,000, plus competitive benefits. This position is funded for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of continuation based on funding and organizational needs.
