Overview

This senior leadership position serves as the principal deputy to the Director of Field Services and plays a central role in shaping the strategic direction, operational effectiveness, and long-term vision of the Vermont Department of Corrections' statewide Field Services Division. The position provides oversight and support for community corrections operations, supervises district managers and central office staff, leads strategic planning, policy development, resource allocation, program innovation, contract administration, and performance evaluation. As the Director's primary designee, this role exercises broad independent judgment, represents the Department before the Legislature, partner agencies, the media, and other stakeholders, and provides expertise and leadership during both routine operations and critical incidents. The position also requires availability to provide after-hours decision-making and operational support, serving on behalf of the Director during emergencies and other situations requiring executive leadership outside of normal business hours. The Deputy Director also serves on internal and external committees to serve operational and interagency needs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma AND four (4) or more years' experience in human services or criminal justice, INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience working with corrections administration.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in criminal justice or a human service-related field.

Schedule

The schedule for this position may require availability to provide after-hours decision-making and operational support, serving on behalf of the Director during emergencies and other situations requiring executive leadership outside of normal business hours. The position may also require substantial exposure to adversary proceedings and court cases, although direct contact with supervised individuals is limited, creating a potential for physical assault and injury.

Environmental Factors

  • Duties are performed in a variety of settings including an office setting, within district field offices, in public meetings, etc.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for required travel.
  • Duties may entail significant amounts of evening, weekend, and emergency activity.
  • The position may require to be on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week, when serving as the designee for the Director and if assigned primary responsibility for oversite of a region or unit, except when on leave.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma AND four (4) or more years' experience in human services or criminal justice, INCLUDING two (2) years or more of experience working with corrections administration.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in criminal justice or a human service-related field.

  • Optional to include, if appliable. An example would be specialized training / certifications that would be required to fulfill job duties.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, pursuant to 20 V.S.A. 2056c or other applicable statutory authority, requires criminal record checks for all AHS positions, including motor vehicle driving record checks and national record checks where appropriate.
  • DOC PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Requirements In accordance with federal regulation, any person applying for employment in the Department of Corrections must provide relevant information. Previous institutional employers will be contacted and required to provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse.
