Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs

About the Role

The Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs is responsible for the overarching vision and strategy that integrates exhibitions, collection gallery installations, and collection initiatives to support OMCA’s brand as a museum, garden, and gathering place. This role advances the Museum’s social impact by building trust, understanding, and connection between people and communities.

Working closely with the Director & CEO and other department managers, the Deputy Director leads the development of a comprehensive content calendar for temporary exhibitions and collection installations. These initiatives showcase the breadth of OMCA’s interdisciplinary collections, center equity and community voice, engage multiple constituencies, and tell the unique and compelling stories of Oakland and California.

The position partners with the Senior Director of Learning, Experience and Programming to lead the Content and Experience “circle,” which includes departments collaborating to create dynamic and integrated exhibitions and programs aligned with the Museum’s mission. These efforts aim to achieve OMCA’s audience, social impact, and financial sustainability goals.

As a member of the Senior Directors Council, the Deputy Director shares in overall leadership for the Museum, including strategic planning and policy-making. This role oversees approximately 35 employees across the Collections, Curatorial, Design, and Production departments and directly coaches and supervises 6 positions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the overarching vision and strategy for exhibitions, collection gallery installations, and collection initiatives.
• Lead the creation of a comprehensive content calendar for temporary exhibitions and collection installations that reflect OMCA’s interdisciplinary collections and center equity and community voices.
• Collaborate with the Director & CEO and other department managers to align curatorial initiatives with the Museum’s mission and goals.
• Partner with the Senior Director of Learning, Experience and Programming to lead the Content and Experience “circle,” ensuring integrated exhibitions and programs.
• Contribute to strategic planning and policy-making as a member of the Senior Directors Council.
• Oversee and supervise approximately 35 employees in the Collections, Curatorial, Design, and Production departments, including direct coaching of 6 positions.
