About the role

The Deputy Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Office, managing professional staff, workflow, and projects related to the administration of university policies on animal research. This role is instrumental in assessing workflow, creating efficiencies, and ensuring excellent customer service to the research community.

Responsibilities

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides end-to-end oversight of IACUC committee meetings, ensuring all preparatory materials, regulatory requirements, and post-meeting actions are completed accurately and on time.
  • Supports the director in ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and accreditation standards through ongoing oversight and operational execution.
  • Supports the director in identifying and addressing program gaps, including follow-up actions to promote adherence to regulatory expectations and standards.
  • Contributes to the development, review, and refinement of policies and standard operating procedures for the animal care and use program.
  • In the absence of the IACUC Director, serves as an IACUC Leader for any campus supported by the IACUC Office.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff to define and ensure adherence to research compliance methodologies and standards.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains research compliance policies and procedures in accordance with university, state, and federal regulations.
  • Manages high-level assignments and allocation of resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives involving staff in other departments.
  • Conducts personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Provides oversight for the development, implementation, and documentation of appropriate training and education in research.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines and resource plans for research compliance initiatives.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in communicating with other compliance areas, researchers, sponsors, and federal/external agencies regarding research compliance.
  • Collaborates with other research compliance leaders to recommend standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor's degree (preferably in a related field).
  • Preferred: Master's degree in a related field.

Work Experience

  • Required: 4 years of experience (preferably in research program administration or research compliance consulting).
  • Required: 1 year of management experience.
  • Preferred: Experience in animal research in a university setting.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Required: Certified Institutional Review Board Professional (CIP), Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP), or other relevant professional certification upon date of hire.
  • Preferred: Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) certification within 1 year from date of hire.
