Deputy City Attorney II - Civil Law
Job Summary
Note: The eligibility list established for this position will be used to fill several (temporary) positions within the Community and Cultural Services Department, Community Programs Division – Annenberg Community Beach House and the Santa Monica Swim Center.
Note: Shifts are generally 8 to 9 hour days, several days per week, including evenings and weekends.
Representative Duties
- Teaches swimming lessons to children and adults.
- Teaches special aquatic classes.
- Affords assistance with coordinating various aquatic activities.
- Enforces swimming pool rules and regulations.
- Maintains order in and around the pool.
- Recognizes and performs aquatic emergency rescues, administers artificial respiration, CPR, and first aid, when necessary.
- Keeps pool, decks, and dressing rooms safe, clean and orderly.
- Completes various forms and paperwork pertinent to the day-to-day running of an aquatic facility.
- Completes chemical checks of the pool water.
- Follows and enforces all applicable safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge:
- Of water safety practices.
- Effective customer service techniques.
Ability:
- To teach proper swimming techniques and water safety.
- To perform lifesaving techniques.
- To establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
- To swim with proficiency and endurance.
Skill:
- In lifeguarding, first aid and CPR techniques.
- To read, write and communicate in English at an appropriate level.
- To use basic computer operations with applicable software.
Education, Training and Experience
Currently enrolled in high school or the equivalent.
Possession of a valid American Red Cross or state recognized certificate in the following: CPR for the Professional Rescuer (or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider), Lifeguard Training, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) within 6 months of hire.
Obtain a valid work permit, if applicable.

Supplemental Information
- This is a temporary hourly position without benefits.
- The City of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as-needed (temporary) employees who are not eligible for coverage under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).
- The City and as-needed employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the deferred compensation plan.
- As-needed employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis.
Selection Process
Application Review Board: All applicants must submit clear, concise and complete information regarding their qualifications for the position. All applicants will be reviewed and only those candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of experience and education, as submitted, will be invited to participate further in the selection process.
Testing may consist of any or all of the following components: Performance Test: to measure job-related knowledge and abilities.
Background Investigations: Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.

Describe the methods and procedures you have used to help maintain a safe pool environment. Include the actions you have taken to ensure the public follows pool rules and regulations.
