About the role
The Alternate Public Defender (APD) seeks individuals to represent the defense in criminal cases. The role involves handling misdemeanor and less difficult felony cases, conducting interviews, preparing legal documents, and representing clients in various court proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Represent the defense in misdemeanor and less difficult felony cases
- Interview clients and witnesses, conduct preliminary hearings, and confer with law enforcement and experts
- Prepare briefs, pleadings, and motions, and advise clients on their rights and actions in court
- Participate in arraignment, pleading, and probation/sentencing proceedings
- Represent juvenile clients in Juvenile Court hearings
- Prepare reports on the advisability of appealing cases
Requirements
- One year of full-time experience in criminal law representing adults and/or juveniles in delinquency proceedings, equivalent to Deputy Alternate Public Defender I or Deputy Public Defender I
- Admission to practice law in all courts in California
- A valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation capability
Qualifications
To be considered, applicants must submit proof of meeting California State Bar requirements, such as a copy of their current/valid California Bar Card or a letter from the official California Bar authority confirming bar passage and compliance with admission requirements.
