Department of Neurology, Division of Vascular Neurology seeking Vascular Neurologist, Assistant Professor to Professor

About the Role

The University of Utah, Department of Neurology, Division of Vascular Neurology is hiring three vascular neurologists for clinician‑investigator and clinician‑educator tracks. Positions are open to junior, mid‑career, and senior neurologists, including candidates requiring a J‑1 visa waiver. Academic rank and track will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications. The division comprises nine stroke neurologists with expertise in telehealth, systems of care, neuroimaging, neuro‑rehabilitation, neuro‑education, and clinical trials, and serves as a Regional Coordinating Center for NIH StrokeNet, a NeuroNEXT site, and hosts a CTSA.

Responsibilities

• Provide acute “brain attack” care and respond to telestroke calls.
• Staff the inpatient vascular ward service.
• Maintain negotiable outpatient and Teleneurology clinic duties.
• Mentor ACGME stroke fellows.
• Participate in stroke center quality‑improvement initiatives.
• Conduct independent research and/or support clinical trials, with strong training in research methodology encouraged for clinician‑scientist candidates.
• Collaborate with the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Administration Health Center as a neurovascular specialist (optional).
• Engage in outreach clinics serving homeless, incarcerated, and rural/frontier populations via in‑person and telemedicine platforms.

Requirements

• Board‑certified/board‑eligible (BC/BE) in Neurology and Vascular Neurology.
• Eligibility for a J‑1 visa waiver (if applicable).
• For clinician‑scientist track: demonstrated training in research methodology and a plan for independent research.
• For clinician‑educator track: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) training or expertise and interest in expanding the Teleneurology program.

Qualifications

• Open to junior, mid‑career, and senior faculty levels.
• Experience or interest in telehealth, systems of care, neuroimaging, neuro‑rehabilitation, neuro‑education, and clinical trials is highly valued.
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, vascular neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency medicine, and neurocritical care specialists.
• Commitment to mentoring junior faculty and fostering a collaborative, compassionate academic environment.

Skills

• Telemedicine and telestroke program participation.
• Use of AI tools for large‑vessel occlusion (LVO) detection.
• Clinical trial coordination and management.
• Research design, data analysis, and grant writing.
• Mentorship of fellows and junior clinicians.
• Outreach to underserved and rural populations.
• Expertise in specialty outpatient care (e.g., PFO, CADASIL, CCM, intracranial atherosclerosis, cryptogenic stroke).
