Department Chair, Public Health
About the role
The Department Chair of Public Health at Belmont University is responsible for setting the vision and strategic goals for the department, overseeing academic, administrative, and financial leadership, and aligning all areas to the College and University's priorities.
Responsibilities
Department Governance and Office Management: Shapes the Department mission, builds consensus around goals, conducts meetings, implements long-range programs, and supports faculty in planning and decision-making. Manages staff and faculty, supervises, evaluates, and assigns office space and equipment. Ensures adherence to research guidelines and campus policies.
Curriculum and Program Development: Leads curriculum and program development, including instruction, curricular review, assessment, and program development. Manages accreditation and program review processes. Assigns and monitors service commitments. Establishes and fosters positive engagement with practice sites. Works with site supervisors and faculty members to ensure clear understanding of responsibilities, revenue streams, and evaluations.
Personnel: Manages faculty and staff work assignments, annual reviews, committee work, conflict resolutions, and termination. Develops and mentors faculty for leadership roles. Sets professional goals and makes merit recommendations.
Students: Recruits and retains students, designs and implements programs that increase awareness of programs, foster enrollment, and develop students in programs. Works with the AD for Student Success and Formation.
Financial and Facilities: Prepares and proposes Department budgets, seeks outside funding, and administers the budget. Manages physical facilities and escalates problems. Monitors Department security and maintenance.
Communication and Fundraising: Sets the vision for communication strategies, including verbal, electronic, social media, newsletters, reports, and storytelling. Works with the CPHS Operations Manager and others to ensure timely reporting of news stories. Works with the Dean and the CPHS Development team on fundraising strategies.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
A doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD, or equivalent) in Public Health or a closely related field.
Knowledge of principles, methods, and current developments in the field of study.
Knowledge of subject matter and course content taught.
Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
Demonstrated capacity to engage in high-quality scholarly activity.
Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
Skilled in the use of computers, Internet resources, and MS Office software.
Ability to learn relevant sections of BannerWeb, Belmont University's online integrated database system for student grading.
Ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.
Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators, and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Knowledge of the programs and services offered by Belmont University.
Interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefered demonstrated ability to lead faculty, manage personnel, and oversee academic programs.
Record of effective teaching in public health or related disciplines and mentoring students.
Sustained record of peer-reviewed publications and/or impactful scholarship.
Experience with budgeting, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
Familiarity with accreditation processes.
Experience with curriculum development and program assessment.
Experience collaborating with public health agencies, healthcare systems, community organizations, and professional organizations.
