About the Role

Under the supervision of the Regional Dental Director, a Dentist licensed in the state of West Virginia is responsible and accountable for supervising the dental staff and managing the dental activity, as well as providing oral health care to patients. This includes fillings, extractions, dentures, root canals, and other general dentistry services.

Responsibilities

• Provides overall supervision of the dental department, including hiring, coaching, counseling, administering discipline, and termination of subordinate staff as needed.
• Provides preventative and restorative treatment to all inmates.
• Performs and interprets radiographic examinations as indicated.
• Performs all general dentistry services, including restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthodontic services as described by West Virginia Health Service Bulletins.
• Supervises staff in cleaning teeth, making impressions for prosthetic devices, planning and maintaining an oral hygiene program, completing records accurately, and all procedures associated with dental care.
• Arranges proper referral for procedures that cannot be performed on-site.
• Provides supervision of staff in instructing offenders in preventative practices for maintaining proper oral hygiene.
• Submits a monthly report of Dental Department activities.
• Participates in staff development programs.
• Develops and updates departmental policies and procedures.
• Supervises and evaluates all assigned dental staff.
• Forwards all outside referrals of offenders to the Regional Dental Director to ensure necessity.
• Serves as the clinical authority on all matters related to the delivery of dental services, providing direction, guidance, and oversight to dental staff and programs.
• Determines timeframes for non-emergent and elective treatments according to priority and availability.
• Determines the appropriateness of non-routine treatment and ensures it does not interfere with higher-priority services.
• Examines patients and documents findings on standard forms using applicable dental classification systems (e.g., APHA).
• Provides or arranges for appropriate preventative and restorative dental care within administrative guidelines.
• Provides or arranges for emergency care as soon as possible, ensuring continuity of care.
• Supplies data for clinic reports as requested.
• Maintains up-to-date dental licenses and ensures a current copy is on file in the Health Care Unit.
• Must be CPR certified and skilled in recognizing symptoms of shock and fainting, prepared to provide necessary aid during emergencies.
• Responsible for dental office security, including instrument, medicine, and needle counts.
• Ensures appropriate and quality orientation for all newly hired dental staff.
• Notifies the Wexford Health Staffing Department of vacant or upcoming vacant positions and assists in filling them.
• Familiar with overtime and commodities budgets and works to remain within budget.
• Notifies the Regional Manager of staffing vacancies.
• Obtains approval prior to exceeding staffing hours and strives for 100% compliance.
• Complies with and enforces Wexford Health and facility policies and procedures, ensuring subordinate compliance.
• Serves as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee.
• Receives direction from WVDOC personnel, including Wardens, Assistant Wardens, and Health Services Administrators.
• Maintains the confidentiality of inmate records.
• Approaches change positively and accepts constructive criticism in stressful situations.
• Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the Medical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Regional Manager.

Requirements

• Current West Virginia Dental license.
• Current DEA license.
• Current CPR certification.
• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree.
• Minimum one (1) year of practicing dentistry (preferred).
• Skilled in recognizing symptoms of shock and fainting; prepared to provide necessary aid during procedures.
• Correctional experience preferred.
• Supervisory experience preferred.

Schedule

Part-time, 16 hours per week (2 days).
