About the role

Under the supervision of the Regional Dental Director, a Dentist licensed in West Virginia is responsible for supervising dental staff, managing dental activities, and providing oral health care to patients. This includes fillings, extractions, dentures, root canals, and other general dentistry services.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall supervision of the dental department, including hiring, coaching, counseling, administering discipline, and termination of subordinate staff.
• Deliver preventative and restorative dental treatment to inmates.
• Perform and interpret radiographic examinations as indicated.
• Provide general dentistry services, including restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthodontic care, as outlined by West Virginia Health Service Bulletins.
• Supervise staff in teeth cleaning, prosthetic device impressions, oral hygiene program planning, record-keeping, and all dental care procedures.
• Arrange referrals for procedures that cannot be performed on-site.
• Instruct offenders in preventative oral hygiene practices and supervise staff in this effort.
• Submit a monthly report of Dental Department activities.
• Participate in staff development programs and update departmental policies and procedures.
• Supervise and evaluate assigned dental staff.
• Forward outside referrals to the Regional Dental Director for approval.
• Serve as the clinical authority on dental service delivery, providing direction and oversight to staff and programs.
• Determine timeframes for non-emergent and elective treatments based on priority and availability.
• Assess the appropriateness of non-routine treatment to ensure it does not interfere with higher-priority services.
• Examine patients and document findings using standard forms and dental classification systems (e.g., APHA).
• Provide or arrange preventative and restorative dental care within administrative guidelines.
• Ensure timely care for emergency patients and continuity of care.
• Supply data for clinic reports as requested.
• Maintain up-to-date dental licenses and CPR certification; ensure copies are on file.
• Recognize symptoms of shock and fainting and provide necessary aid during emergencies.
• Maintain dental office security, including instrument, medicine, and needle counts.
• Ensure proper orientation for newly hired dental staff.
• Notify the Staffing Department of vacancies and assist in filling positions.
• Monitor overtime and commodities budgets to remain within limits.
• Notify the Regional Manager of staffing vacancies and obtain approval before exceeding staffing hours.
• Strive for 100% compliance with staffing hours.
• Comply with and enforce Wexford Health and facility policies and procedures.
• Serve as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee.
• Follow direction from WVDOC personnel, including Wardens, Assistant Wardens, and Health Services Administrators.
• Maintain confidentiality of inmate records.
• Approach change positively and accept constructive criticism in stressful situations.
• Suggest improvements for work conditions to the Medical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Regional Manager.

Requirements

• Current West Virginia Dental license.
• Current DEA license.
• Current CPR certification.
• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum one (1) year of practicing dentistry.
• Experience recognizing symptoms of shock and fainting and providing emergency aid.
• Correctional healthcare experience.
• Supervisory experience.
