Dentist 1 (NY HELPS)
About the role
This Dentist 1 position is a direct service role providing professional dental care for youth in the custody of OCFS. Responsibilities include diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, as well as performing corrective, restorative, and preventative dental procedures in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Clean teeth by scaling calculus.
- Conduct examinations of individuals’ teeth and surrounding oral structures using x-rays, mouth mirrors, and other diagnostic tools to identify pathological or irregular conditions.
- Treat dental diseases, injuries, and malfunctions of teeth and gums.
- Perform restoration of simple and compound cavities.
- Administer anesthetics.
- Perform oral surgery within the scope of professional qualifications.
- Perform extractions of teeth.
- Treat teeth, mouth, and gum infections with appropriate drugs or by surgery.
- Maintain written records of individuals’ dental treatments.
- Advise individuals on dental health practices.
- Instruct and direct paraprofessional dental staff in auxiliary duties.
- Provide general supervision for licensed dental hygienists in the performance of their duties.
Travel
During the next 2–3-year period, youth from the Finger Lakes Residential Center (Tompkins County) will be transported to MacCormick Secure Center due to dental suite renovations. Upon completion of the renovations at Finger Lakes, the candidate will travel to the Finger Lakes Dental Clinic, likely 2 days per week, resulting in a travel percentage of approximately 40%. Additional duties and travel expectations will be discussed in detail at the interview.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a license and current registration to practice dentistry in New York State.
- Maintain a valid New York State license and registration.
