Dental Patient Service Representative
About the role
Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is a leading community health center providing comprehensive care to over 227,000 patients annually, with a special focus on uninsured and low-income individuals. With more than 90 sites across San Diego County, FHCSD offers a wide array of services including primary care, behavioral health, dental, vision, and specialized care.
Responsibilities
- Manage patient check-in and check-out processes, including identification verification, demographic updates, and insurance information.
- Collect specified co-pays and payments from patients according to their coverage, and handle self-pay patients.
- Screen for eligibility for financial assistance and follow policies for collecting and handling cash.
- Ensure patient information is accurately entered into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Follow up on referrals and authorizations for specialty services and contact patients to schedule appointments and send reminders.
- Respond to billing inquiries and escalate issues as necessary.
- Perform general clerical duties such as scanning, tracking, and managing correspondence and packages.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent required, or relevant combination of education and experience.
- Medical Assistant certification, C-NA certification, or completion of a Medical Terminology course preferred.
- Valid California driver’s license, automobile, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance.
- Experience in administrative or customer service roles, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to multitask, be flexible, ensure accuracy, and manage a high workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer literacy and proficiency in using a computer system for appointment scheduling and accessing EHR information.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact with diverse patient populations.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures is helpful.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and listen attentively to patients and medical professionals.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
- Experience in administrative or customer service roles, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment and independently.
- Sound computer literacy to use a computer system for entering information, managing appointments, and accessing EHR information.
- Knowledge of cashiering functions, including recording payments and cash received.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse patient base.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology and procedures is helpful.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to listen well and respond appropriately to changing priorities and situations.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $25.00 - $29.12 per hour.
