About the role
The Dental Hygienist at the University of Illinois at Mile Square Health Center is responsible for providing preventive, therapeutic, and educational hygiene services to patients.
Responsibilities
- Works administratively on the recall system
- Schedules patients that are overdue for their prophylaxis and periodontal maintenance appointments
- Examines teeth and surrounding hard and soft tissues for disease, lesions and other abnormal conditions
- Removes supra and subgingival soft/hard deposits and stain from the teeth and endosseous dental implants
- Records periodontal charting in the electronic health record
- Provides oral hygiene aids and educates patients on oral hygiene care
- Affords assistance with several aspects of research in patient outcomes assessments, including scheduling patient appointments, assisting in patient assessment, providing prophylaxis, sealants and collection/compiling/analyzing data
- Processes digital dental radiographs (intraoral, panoramic, and occlusal)
- Administers local medicaments to periodontal involved areas
- Administers anesthetic and nitrous in accordance to licensure guidelines
- Administers fluoride
- Takes preliminary impressions
- Records patient vitals
- Performs sterilization and disinfection as needed
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned
Requirements
Current/valid licensure as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Illinois.
Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of instruments and aseptic techniques and sterilization procedures
- Communicates effectively with faculty, students, staff, and patients
- Maintains an effective recall program and maintains a productive environment
- Intermediate level of experience with computer software such as Excel, Word, and electronic health records (EHR)
- Obtains and records basic medical and dental histories and information and updates patient appointment records
