About the Role

The Dental Assistant supports the Director of Dentistry, Staff Dentist, and Dental Hygienist in delivering patient care, maintaining records, and performing administrative tasks at Johnson Health Center (JHC).

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Dentist and Dental Hygienist with chairside duties, including seating patients and preparing instrumentation and materials for treatment.
  • Educates patients on dental disease prevention, proper brushing and flossing techniques, and post-operative care.
  • Serves as a liaison for patients via telephone and in-person communications regarding medical and dental issues.
  • Consults with the dentist and healthcare team to facilitate communication among clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Performs clinical duties:
    • Prepares patients for treatment, including recording medical and dental history and vital signs.
    • Obtains diagnostic digital X-rays (bitewings, periapical films, panorex).
    • Performs dental prophylaxis, applies fluoride varnish, places dental sealants, and administers topical anesthesia.
    • Removes sutures and assists in medical or dental emergencies.
    • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, maintains operatories, and ensures compliance with OSHA standards.
    • Maintains autoclave operations, including daily water levels, sterilization cycles, and monthly testing.
    • Stocks operatories with supplies and orders inventory as needed.
    • Cleans suction lines, traps, and equipment on a scheduled basis.
    • Manages trash removal from operatories and clinic areas.
  • Assists with the school dental program, including preparation and implementation.
  • Performs administrative duties:
    • Charts treatment notes and updates patient dental records.
    • Assists with front office procedures, including patient check-in, payments, and appointment scheduling.
    • Supports school program coordination, marketing, data collection, and preparation.
  • Participates in staff meetings, quality improvement programs, and mandatory OSHA infection control training.
  • Adheres to JHC’s infection control policies and universal precautions.
  • Engages in community outreach activities as determined by JHC.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently as a team member in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in operating office equipment (computer, copier, fax) and relevant software.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with staff and patients.
  • Ability to multitask with varied and unrelated duties.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Fast-paced office setting with frequent travel to other locations. Requires:

  • Lifting or exerting force up to 35 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequent movement, including sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion.
  • OSHA high-risk position.
