Dental Assistant (Part-Time)

About the Role

The Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine is the largest provider of oral health care services on Long Island. The Dental Care Center is the teaching clinic of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. Within our state-of-the-art facility, quality, affordable care is provided by well-trained students and post-graduate residents under the guidance of experienced faculty members. The Dental Care Center proudly offers every dental specialty in one location, incorporating the latest technologies and materials in treatment.

This position is assigned to work at The Long Island State Veterans Home, located on the campus of Stony Brook University. The Long Island State Veterans Home is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with a 40-slot Adult Day Health Care Program dedicated to the care of honorably discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses, and Gold Star parents.

Responsibilities

• Assist during the examination, treatment, screening, and emergency care of patients.
• Prepare the necessary instrument set-ups for procedures.
• Mix cement, amalgam, composite filling materials, and impression material.
• Clean up the dental operatory after patient visits.
• Work with dental students in their training in the use of dental auxiliaries in the delivery of dental care (e.g., four-handed dentistry), involving sitting at a chair, twisting, and leaning across the patient.
• Work in the supply and dispensing rooms issuing material to students and faculty, and keep associated records.
• Dispense supplies, including carrying instrument trays and equipment (such as cavitrons, composite lights, electro surges) from storage cabinets to counter.
• Assist with inventory control of dental supplies, including unloading supplies, unpacking boxes, and stocking high and low cabinets and shelves (involves lifting and bending).
• Assist with maintaining the Dental Clinic and dental equipment in a clean and orderly fashion.
• Take and develop X-ray films.
• Maintain patient records of appointments and insurance records, answer telephones, and make appointments.
• Sterilize equipment and instruments, and sort and identify instruments.
• Attend training and development courses, including CPR, Infection Control, and Right to Know.
• May assist on the Dental Van when it goes out in the community.
• Other duties as assigned appropriate to departmental rank and mission.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• One year of experience in dental assisting OR possession of a certificate in dental assisting.

Qualifications

• Preference given to candidates with prior experience and training in dental assisting.
• Bilingual in Spanish.
• Experience working in specialty dental offices.
• Certified in BLS (Basic Life Support).

Schedule

Part-time position, 18.75 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Pay

Hiring rate: $20,196 at 0.50 FTE. This position includes a geographic pay of $3,000 annually at 0.50 FTE.

This is an essential position; incumbents are required to report to work or remain at work during emergencies, even if classes are canceled or the campus operates on limited functions.
