About the role
The Office of Oral Health (OOH) within the Population and Community Health Bureau (PCHB) at the New Mexico Department of Health operates a school-based prevention program. This dental assistant position supports that program by assisting the Registered Dental Hygienist in evaluating children's teeth, applying dental sealants or fluoride varnish, and managing health records.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Registered Dental Hygienist in evaluating children's teeth and applying dental sealants or fluoride varnish
- Prepare materials for the application of dental sealants and fluoride varnish in collaboration with the dental hygienist
- Schedule and confirm clinic appointments
- Receive and maintain records
- Order dental and office materials and supplies
- Maintain dental supplies in collaboration with the Registered Dental Hygienist following OSHA infection control guidelines
- Conduct oral health education training for school-aged children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings
Customers served
The school-based programs serve low-income and uninsured children from urban, rural, and frontier schools in New Mexico.
Ideal candidate
- Bilingual (English and Spanish)
- Experience in reporting metrics (data surveillance)
- Current CPR and OSHA certified
- Experience providing oral health education to individuals and groups
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent and a Certificate in Dental Assisting, or Associate's Degree in Applied Science of Dental Health
- Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education
Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
- Must complete a Defensive Driving Course
Working conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (bending, stooping, and reaching)
- Operation of a cargo van or similar vehicle
- In-state travel; long distances by state vehicle
- Work in school settings with various ages of youth and in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VTD) and extensive phone usage
Pay
$18.69 - $28.04 hourly ($38,885 - $58,327 annually). This position is a Pay Band C3.
