Demonstration Teacher: Elementary Reading/Language Arts - Pool
Reports to: Principals • Pay Grade: Teacher Salary Schedule (eligible for TIA) • FLSA Status: Exempt • Duty Days: 187 days • This is a grant-funded position contingent on availability of funds.
About the Role
This campus-based position supports the Title I program in the content area of Reading/Language Arts. The role involves teaching no more than one STAAR-tested core content period as the teacher of record, serving as a model for exemplary classroom instruction and on-the-job professional development. The position focuses on building Reading/Language Arts capacity across all grade levels through professional learning, real-time coaching, and in-classroom support. In collaboration with campus instructional leadership, the role co-facilitates professional learning communities to ensure alignment of best practices and accelerate student achievement.
Responsibilities
- Teaches no more than one STAAR-tested standard class period or block as the teacher of record to serve as a lab observation setting for other teachers.
- Maintains a class roster that meets Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) requirements.
- Develops and implements strategic acceleration models campuswide to support students below grade level.
- Provides small group instruction beyond their roster of students weekly, following evidence-based high-impact tutoring practices, while tracking student progress and growth.
- Develops and implements strategic coaching rotations and sprints with campus administration to support content area teachers through targeted instructional strategies and feedback.
- Supports teachers through real-time coaching for instructional skill development to increase student academic progress.
- Assists teachers with instructional needs specific to the content area through observation, feedback, modeling, co-teaching, and professional learning.
- Debriefs and conducts professional conversations with teachers regarding instructional delivery.
- Demonstrates a growth mindset in building strong relationships with teachers.
- Provides on-campus professional development aligned with district priorities and the Strategic Plan.
- Serves as a co-facilitator for weekly on-campus professional learning community (PLC) time for the assigned content area.
- Collaborates with teachers on planning, internalization, and delivering standards-aligned lessons and daily demonstrations of student learning.
- Participates in mandatory professional development to improve required skills.
- Participates in train-the-trainer programs and delivers campus and district professional development to support high-quality Reading/Language Arts instruction.
- Leverages their classroom as a model learning environment by creating high-quality instructional videos showcasing best practices.
- Supports and participates in developing and implementing content-focused parent/guardian engagement activities and events.
- Maintains accurate and timely records to document support.
- Attends department meetings, training, and professional learning as assigned.
- Responds promptly to telephone and email inquiries from campus staff and central administration.
- Maintains cooperative and professional working relationships with peers, students, administration, and other school/district employees.
- Eligible for Bilingual and ESL stipends if teaching and roster criteria are met.
- Ensures instruction aligns with district-adopted high-quality instructional materials and supports campus-based curriculum implementation.
- Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures safe operating conditions.
- Follows established safety procedures and corrects unsafe conditions in the work area.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (major in Education, a Content Area, or a related field required).
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Valid Texas Teaching Certification required.
- ESL or Bilingual Certification preferred.
- 3 years of elementary teaching experience in Reading/Language Arts with a track record of significantly increasing student achievement.
- Experience with diverse student populations, especially in a large multicultural urban district, preferred.
- Experience facilitating or presenting professional learning required.
- Experience as an instructional coach, department head, team lead, or teacher leader with a track record of increasing student achievement preferred.
- Bilingual working proficiency (English/Spanish) preferred in some settings.
Skills
- Knowledge of current, evidence-based Reading/Language Arts teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
- Knowledge of assigned content facts, concepts, theories, and principles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
- Skill in professional learning, technical assistance, and consultation.
- Skill in planning and providing professional learning on lesson internalization.
- Skill in researching and interpreting relevant data.
- College-level writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including after school and/or Saturdays, for professional learning activities.
- Ability to conduct classroom observations and determine appropriate professional learning for teachers.
- Ability to consider academic, social, and emotional needs of students in decision-making.
- Ability to facilitate and conduct group meetings.
- Ability to handle confidential files and records.
- Ability to lead, develop, and direct professional learning.
- Ability to aggregate and analyze student outcome data and communicate insights to teachers.
- Ability to work effectively in collaborative teams and lead PLCs.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a multi-ethnic educational environment.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Knowledge of federal and state guidelines and district policies regarding education and students.
Schedule
- 187 duty days per year.
- Occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours may be required.
- Demonstration Teacher extra duty days will align with job responsibilities and be defined by Learning and Leading in collaboration with the campus principal.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching.
- Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
- Works in an office or classroom setting.
- Regular and punctual attendance required.
