About the role
Deli personnel assist customers with their requests for a variety of meat and cheese while providing excellent customer service. Duties and responsibilities must be carried out in a manner consistent with the goals, values, and operating principles of Sedano’s Supermarkets, and in conformity with all laws and regulations governing the company.
Every employee, regardless of job title, is responsible for ensuring a safe environment throughout the store, maintaining a friendly attitude, wearing the proper uniform or dress code, keeping the store stocked and organized, and providing excellent customer service on a regular basis.
Responsibilities
- Assist customers by answering questions regarding products sold within the department
- Remain knowledgeable about the products sold within the department
- Cut, slice, weigh, and package deli items according to customers’ requests
- Lift and carry merchandise between display coolers, countertops, slicers, cutting boards, refrigerators, and freezers
- Check product quality to ensure freshness; review "sell by" dates and take appropriate action; rotate product by date to maintain freshness
- Maintain refrigerated cases with appetizing displays of products for sale
- Keep work area clean, orderly, and free from safety hazards; maintain awareness of floor conditions; ensure all safety measures are taken to protect customers, vendors, and employees
- Wash, sanitize, and store knives and other department utensils and equipment properly
- Use and maintain all equipment in the meat department according to company guidelines (refrigerators, freezers, slicers, etc.); report any equipment malfunctions to manager
- Maintain all requirements for a sanitary work area to keep food safe from contamination; adhere to department procedures with all aspects of federal, state, local, and company health, safety, and sanitation codes
- Complete all required cleaning procedures at the end of the shift, including hosing down the floor, cleaning countertops, slicers, etc.
- Report all accidents promptly according to company procedures
- Attend and participate in departmental and store meetings
- Maintain punctuality and good attendance in compliance with company policies
- Perform other work-related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position
Secondary Responsibilities
- Assist with back room production as needed (wrapping and/or packaging)
- Label, stock, and inventory department merchandise
- Stay current with present, future, seasonal, and special ads
- Assist with Meat and Seafood areas when needed
- Assist with unloading and/or verifying merchandise off meat delivery trucks when needed
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- Previous deli experience or training required
Skills
- Ability to properly use department equipment such as knives, scale, slicer, etc.
- Adequate knife handling skills
- Ability to read, write, and speak English and Spanish preferred
- Ability to understand and follow instructions in both English and Spanish preferred
- Ability and willingness to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small group situations with managers, co-workers, and customers
- Very good interpersonal skills
- Takes responsibility for own actions
- Ability to work scheduled hours and days, including holidays and weekends
- Basic math and numerical skills, including weights, measures, and identifying product codes
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form

Work Environment
The individual performs duties in a grocery store environment with frequent contact with supervisors, employees, and customers. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
- Frequent use of gloves, knives, meat and cheese slicers, wrapping devices, case cutters, stock carts, refrigerators, freezers, coolers, and cleaning supplies and equipment
- Floor surfaces may get slippery; caution and safety are mandatory
- Proper attire is required to tolerate freezing temperatures when retrieving merchandise from freezers
