DEFENSE INVESTIGATOR I

About the role

Incumbents conduct criminal and civil investigations involving the collection and evaluation of evidence in support of clients represented by the Public Defender's Office.

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough investigations for criminal and civil cases
• Collect, document, and evaluate evidence
• Interview witnesses, victims, and other relevant parties
• Prepare detailed reports of findings for legal proceedings
• Collaborate with attorneys to develop case strategies
• Perform related work as required

Requirements

• Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the United States
• Valid Class "C" driver's license or equivalent
• Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance to access federal, state, and local detention facilities and hospitals
• If education was completed outside the United States, documentation proving comparability to a U.S. degree must be provided by the application deadline

Physical demands

This position requires moderate physical activity, including:

• Frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing 10–25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds
• Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching
• Standing and walking for extended periods

The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanent positions. Extra-help appointees may transition to permanent roles as authorized by Fresno County Personnel Rules.
