About the role

Deckhands are responsible for keeping the non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition by performing maintenance chores, such as repairing lines, chipping rust, painting and cleaning decks, cooking, cleaning the galley, cleaning the head, and other areas. They also maintain and operate deck equipment when docking or departing along with helping load and unload cargo. Deckhands stand watch and help to look out for other vessels and obstructions.

Other responsibilities include lashing barges together into tow units, inspecting them periodically, and disconnecting them when the destination is reached.

Deckhands should expect to work twelve (12) hours in a twenty-four (24) hour period, rotating from a six (6) hour period of work to a six (6) hour period of rest. Deckhands are compensated at $200/day.

Responsibilities

  • Keep non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition through maintenance chores like repairing lines, chipping rust, painting and cleaning decks, cooking, cleaning the galley, cleaning the head, and other areas.
  • Maintain and operate deck equipment during docking or departure.
  • Help load and unload cargo.
  • Stand watch and look out for other vessels and obstructions.

Requirements

  • Must have a maritime background and a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card issued by Homeland Security).
  • First Aid & CPR certifications.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Learn safety rules and become familiar with proper usage of safety equipment.
  • Comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures at all times under the direction of Stevens Towing Company, Inc.’s safety policies.
  • Mariner applicants must be found fit for duty per United States Coast Guard or International mariner physical fitness requirements for employment.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have a maritime background and a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card issued by Homeland Security).
  • Must have First Aid & CPR certifications.
  • Must be able to comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures at all times under the direction of Stevens Towing Company, Inc.’s safety policies.
  • Must be able to pass a random drug screen as a condition of employment.

Skills

  • Knowledge of deck equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to stand watch and look out for other vessels and obstructions.
