DECK ELECTRICIAN TRAINEE - 4 WEEK UNPAID PROGRAM (2ND SHIFT 4PM-8PM)

About the Role
This position is for job seekers with no trades experience willing to complete two weeks of unpaid training in the Deck Electrician trade. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding.
The Deck Electrician Trainee program is a 4-week (80-hour) unpaid program offered at Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA) on 2nd shift (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Friday).
Deck electricians install, repair, overhaul, and test electrical systems on aircraft carriers and submarines. Tasks include reading electrical schematics, installing lighting and receptacles, wire way rack installation, electronic control installation, preventative maintenance, equipment rebuilding, and welding studs for mounting equipment.
Work environments include outdoor conditions, extreme heights (scaffolding, ladders, elevated platforms), and confined spaces (tanks, compartments, voids). Safety, precision, adaptability, and physical agility are essential.
Requirements
- Complete a 4-week (80-hour) unpaid program on 2nd shift (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Friday)
- Pass a background investigation and drug screen
- Pass a physical agility test
- Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily
- Lift at least 40 pounds
- Perform overhead work
- Work overtime as needed
- Be clean-shaven to wear a respirator
- Work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
- Work at extreme heights
- Work in small, confined spaces
- Willingness to work any shift
- Ability to take measurements or willingness to learn
High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
Pay
The anticipated salary range for this role is $59,675.20 to $62,067.20. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
