The job of DEAN OF STUDENT is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process; assisting in the development of student policies; monitoring student behaviors; providing information and serving as a resource to others; and, addressing issues or situations arising on campus or with enrolled students.

About the role

Develops and implements student-related regulations, policies, procedures, and/or processes for the purpose of providing expertise and knowledge to support staff and students with effective methods of behavior modification, providing direction, and/or complying with mandated requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates communication between personnel, students, and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving issues, and/or resolving conflicts.
  • Facilitates meetings and/or processes for the purpose of providing instructional coaching to district staff and serving as a liaison to families, police/probation officers, and community organizations.
  • Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
  • Participates in, or facilitates, meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of materials (e.g. reports, student activities, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Supports teachers (e.g. assist teachers in establishing classroom management practices, train staff, demonstrate effective courses of discipline and desired outcomes, etc.) for the purpose of providing tools to enhance the learning environment and promoting students' educational success.

Requirements

  • Knowledge: Required to perform basic math, review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Skills: Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; applying behavioral, curriculum and instructional techniques; classifying data and/or information; conducting meetings; utilizing critical observation; enforcing discipline policies; enforcing rules and regulations; and, investigating issues.
  • Ability: Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working collaboratively with teachers, administrators, students, and families; working with frequent interruptions; creating and maintaining effective work relationships; maintaining a positive school climate for students, staff, and community; motivating staff; adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules; and, working simultaneously on multiple issues or projects.

Qualifications

  • Education: Masters degree in job related area with an emphasis in job-related area.
