Position Overview

The Middle School Dean at Nicollet Middle School will provide leadership and build systems to support staff, schools, and the district in increasing appropriate instructional capacity that allows all students to meet or exceed expected growth each year, graduate from high school, and eliminate predictability in achievement through practices of educational equity.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the Principal Team in leading the building's efforts in creating a culturally competent and racially inclusive learning environment so that all students are successful.
  • Aid the leadership team in designing and implementing the district's instructional delivery and professional development in alignment with the district's operational plan and individual school improvement plans.
  • Support district planning and improvement processes.
  • Resolve academic and non-academic student issues in collaboration with teachers, parents, and students.
  • Maintain records of student disciplinary actions and report to administrators, teachers, school attendance staff, parents, and students.
  • Provide mentoring services to students and consultation services to parents.
  • Recommend appropriate programs for students to assist them with behavioral problems.
  • Instruct and advise students regarding their responsibility to adhere to school rules and policies, to foster a safe school environment, and to respect other individuals and property.
  • Arrange for appropriate tutorial instruction related to assigned academic work.
  • Address student attendance problems and assist in the administration of the In-School Suspension Program.
  • Coordinate meetings with students, parents, teachers, and administrators regarding disciplinary problems in school.
  • Counsel individual students as needed and make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or other services.
  • Collaborate with community and government agencies relating to drug and alcohol abuse, truancy, and other conduct.
  • Assist in developing policies and practices to assure building security and safety.
  • Prepare for and attend student expulsion hearings.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline, bullying, sexual harassment, etc.
  • Knowledge of student behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of dispute resolution techniques and ability to engage in dispute resolution.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Experience

  • Successful experience working with children at risk.
  • Successful experience developing and implementing professional development programs relating to non-academic student behavioral issues preferred.
