About the role

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic officer of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities and provides executive leadership to foster an inclusive, collaborative, innovative, and high-performing multidisciplinary academic culture. The position provides overarching administrative oversight of the College’s academic programs, faculty and staff, professional development, fiscal and budgetary operations, research activities, enrollment, and student success, and leads external engagement and advancement efforts including community outreach, strategic partnerships, development, and fundraising.

Primary responsibilities

  • Administrative
    • Strategically manage human, financial, and information resources.
    • Define student success measures, program learning outcomes, and student learning outcomes that reflect specific critical workforce needs across disciplines in the College.
    • Use effective interpersonal and communication skills to engage varied constituencies within and external to the university.
    • Interact effectively with internal and external constituents of diverse backgrounds.
  • Leadership and Collaboration
    • Lead with integrity, transparency, and inclusiveness and influence others beyond formal authority.
    • Implement strategies to create a healthy multidisciplinary academic unit.
    • Develop and lead an inclusive and collaborative culture within the College where the work and contributions of all are recognized and valued.
  • Instructional
    • Provide visionary leadership and coordination of the College’s enrollment, admissions, registration, international involvement, and other student services.
    • Manage large-scale externally funded research grants designated to support any range of disciplines in the College.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent with a current or previous tenured faculty appointment at the rank of full professor (or qualifications at NCCU for the rank of full professor) at a university with a research folio.
  • At least 6 years of experience as a Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, or Director.
  • At least 7 productive years of professorial experience as a faculty member.
  • At least five years of experience developing academic programs, managing faculty, and/or demonstrated knowledge of budgeting.
  • Personal and professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, service to the profession, work with education associations, and/or diversity/inclusion activities.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Experience with faculty, staff, and student development, workshops, or awareness training regarding the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration with academic units and faculty, including familiarity with internationalizing the curriculum and facilitating international exchanges.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with diverse individuals, groups, and cultures.
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to serve as an effective and leading voice for campus-wide committees and initiatives as well as for the Chancellor’s and Provost’s Councils.
