Description of Work

This position focuses on ensuring the safety of park visitors, protecting park resources, and providing public contact throughout the park. Within this role, you will gain the skills necessary to conduct patrol duties, provide emergency response, participate in law enforcement tasks, and assist visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Park Patrol: Monitor park grounds, inspect facilities, and observe visitor activity to support safety and security
  • Public Contact: Provide information to visitors and present a professional ranger presence through communication and conduct
  • Safety Response: Assist with incidents, emergencies, and first aid situations as directed by training and certifications
  • Law Training: Learn enforcement procedures related to state park rules, regulations, and relevant Commonwealth codes
  • Operational Support: Maintain logs, reports, and inventories related to park facilities, equipment, and incidents

Schedule

  • Seasonal, full-time position running approximately March 2026 through November 2026, with return to employment in March 2027
  • 5 days/40 hours per week, including a 30-minute lunch
  • Work days and shifts vary and include holidays, weekends, and evenings
  • No telework option

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Six months of experience providing visitor services in a public park, forest, recreation area, or a privately-owned and operated nature or outdoor education center; or
  • Completion of 15 college credits in natural or environmental sciences, natural resource management, park management, parks or outdoor recreation, forestry, environmental education, ecology, wildlife management, or in a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training

Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of employment
  • Possession of an active motor vehicle license
  • Must successfully complete a structured law enforcement training program to obtain authority in exercising the powers of arrest during the trainee period
  • Must obtain valid certification in standard first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR approved by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or equivalent during the trainee period
  • Must pass psychological testing (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory / MMPI)
  • Must pass Pennsylvania State Police and FBI Criminal Background Checks

Other Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a physical fitness test within 6 months of the start of employment
  • Must meet PA residency requirement
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions

Legal Requirements:

  • Must pass a background investigation
  • Position falls under Child Protective Services Law provisions; requires submission and approval of PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance, with renewals every 5 years
