AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain.

AWS is seeking a Power Generation Engineer and Subject-Matter-Expert to become part of AMER's Amazon Commissioning (ACx) team, responsible for the commissioning and continuous innovation of the Medium Voltage and High Voltage infrastructure associated with our rapidly expanding data center footprint. Successful candidates shall be willing to travel and will be based in one of our three regional hubs – IAD, CMH, or SEA/PDX.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight and coordination of multi-discipline division of work related to pre-commissioning and commissioning of Amazon critical infrastructure construction and special projects
  • Managing and supporting external suppliers, providing multi-discipline input into the scheduling, design and planning of projects to contractors and other internal stakeholder teams
  • Commissioning temporary power plants that bridge utility or increase utility capacity (grid forming/Island mode or grid following/anti-Island mode)
  • Reviewing all multi-discipline commissioning documents to ensure they are compliant with the basis of design (BOD), specifications and standards of the project
  • Overseeing multiple concurrent projects to meet delivery schedule while maintaining compliance to health and safety, policies, standards and finances
  • Auditing commissioning activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, safety and commissioning requirements
  • Reporting to the AMER Global Lead on commissioning progress and metrics for assigned projects
  • Walk job sites in uneven terrain
  • Work at heights and from ladders
  • Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Lift and/or move up to 49 pounds; participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or more
  • Carry objects weighing up to 49 pounds for short distances
  • Work shifts longer than eight hours in duration with potential for night and weekends

Basic Qualifications

  • 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance
  • 5+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of HV/MV Substation electrical systems, Large/Medium and Small Frame Turbines and Aero-derivative units
  • High technical competency in electrical systems and understanding the design concept and intent by reviewing electrical design documentation, including drawings, specifications, pre-functional checklist, startup and functional test scripts, maintainability, construct-ability and commission-ability, vendor submittals and sequences of operations and provide feedback on the same in accordance with Amazon standards for basis of design
  • Protection and coordination (ie. bus protection, transformer protection, generator protections, and Load shedding)
  • Knowledge of CEM (Continuous Emission Monitoring) [ie. ammonia dosing, relevant by product chemicals]
  • Develop and review MV/HV/EHV pre-functional checklists, start-up and functional test scripts for switchgear (AIS/GIS), relays, DC Systems, Power Transformers, Instrumentation Transformers, and Grounding Systems
  • Vendor Management and coordinate with commissioning authority to work in accordance with Amazon practice and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Power generation experience that includes paralleling applications and parallel network redundancy
