To maintain a safe, orderly environment and high level of student learning when the regular teacher is absent.

Qualifications

• Non‑certified substitutes: high school diploma or equivalent; 48 credit hours or college degree preferred; experience working with children preferred.
• Certified substitutes: bachelor’s degree in education with a teaching license.
• Long‑term substitutes: active North Carolina teaching license in the area of the long‑term assignment.

Requirements

• Submit verification of education (high school diploma or official college transcripts) and teaching license, if applicable.
• Provide references that include your current or most recent supervisor.
• Pass a criminal background check and principal interview (assistance available if needed).
• Complete fingerprinting and online NHCS Substitute Training; also complete Effective Teacher Training if you do not hold a teaching license.
