About the role
As a Sr. Regional Design Manager at AWS, you will join a global engineering leadership team of Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. You will drive the design direction and improve delivery for an entire AWS region, establishing procedures and protocols for future systems while collaborating with internal and external partners. This role offers the unique opportunity to influence the design and operation of industry-leading data centers known for innovation, speed to market, and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver high-quality, globally consistent data center designs within budget and schedule.
- Influence stakeholders, internal customers, and external consultants to address program-wide design changes and escalations.
- Manage the design development lifecycle, including change management, permitting (working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction), and implementation (working with construction managers, RFIs, and submittals).
- Apply project management skills such as critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, and cost management.
- Oversee design consultant management, including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments.
- Communicate consistently with AWS leadership and external partners, tracking and reporting metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality.
- Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops and reducing manual work through standardization and automation.
- Create and share global best practice documentation across teams.
- Motivate teams to achieve impeccable quality in a high-growth, deadline-driven environment.
- Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction reviews, and consultations with design partners (anticipated travel not to exceed 25%; international travel may be required).
Qualifications
- 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
- 5+ years of experience in engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of both mechanical and electrical equipment or design related to data center electrical and mechanical topology.
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
- Experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities, especially data centers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with building codes and regulations for your region.
- Experience carrying design concepts from exploration and development through deployment or mass production.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
