About the role

AWS is seeking a Regional Design Manager to join its design team. This role is part of a global engineering leadership team, comprising highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. The Design Manager will lead project teams, manage escalations, and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants. They will also communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including creating, tracking, and reporting metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Able to influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program-wide design changes.
  • Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants.
  • Effectively communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality.
  • Think outside of the box to find innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce contract change orders without negative impacts on quality or reliability.
  • Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work and hand-offs, identifying and implementing best practices across the business, and minimizing process variability through standardization and automation.
  • Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
  • Ability to motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.
  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience in project management or management consulting including handling multiple ongoing projects.
  • Experience in life cycle design projects from design strategy through execution.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Structural, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience in project management or management consulting including handling multiple ongoing projects.
  • Experience in life cycle design projects from design strategy through execution.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.

Skills

  • Experience with building codes and regulations for your region.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
  • Experience managing challenging assignments with aggressive schedules.
  • Experience identifying, mitigating, and managing business risks and tradeoffs.
  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
