Scope of Work
The Database Administrator will assist in implementing, maintaining, and supporting databases across the organization, including traditional enterprise systems and emerging AI-enabled and analytics platforms. The ideal candidate should have a strong foundation in database management concepts, an awareness of modern data and AI architectures, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment while proactively monitoring the health, performance, and reliability of citywide data systems.
Essential Job Duties
- Aid in the design and implementation of new databases and data platforms, including those supporting analytics, machine learning, and AI-enabled applications.
- Maintain and support existing databases by monitoring performance, system health, capacity, and availability across citywide environments; troubleshoot issues and implement optimizations.
- Backup and restore databases as needed, ensuring recoverability and resilience for mission-critical systems.
- Collaborate with other teams to ensure the integration of databases with enterprise applications, reporting systems, and AI/analytics pipelines.
- Perform routine database maintenance tasks such as updates, patches, upgrades, and configuration tuning.
- Develop and maintain documentation on database systems, monitoring standards, health dashboards, and operational processes.
- Ensure data security and integrity by implementing appropriate access controls, auditing, and backup and recovery procedures.
- Provide data extraction and custom reporting as needed to support business intelligence, analytics, and AI initiatives.
- Work closely with the Programmer Analyst team and provide backup to them when necessary.
- Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support and issue resolution as needed.
- Subject to recall 24/7.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
- Ability to sit, stand, and transport self from building to building
- Ability to kneel, crawl, climb, and twist for purposes of installing and maintaining equipment
- Ability to lift and move computer equipment.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- 4 years of experience can be substituted for the Bachelor's degree
- Strong understanding of database management concepts and SQL
- Familiarity with database management systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL
- Knowledge of database backup and recovery procedures
- Esri technical certifications, Microsoft SQL certifications, CompTIA A+ or Tech+ preferred
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
