About the role

Avondale House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency that provides services to individuals with autism, including a day program for young adults where clients receive training in daily living skills and pre-vocational activities, as well as three residential homes for individuals unable to live in their own home. Avondale House has been serving individuals with autism since 1976.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages the Day Program, offering choice and creative activities in a positive environment.
  • Supervises Day Program Direct Support Professionals, including hiring, training, coaching, evaluating, and retaining staff.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors each participant’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).
  • Creates lesson plans and ensures implementation.
  • Markets the Day Program through participation in Transition Fairs.
  • Oversees admission of new Day Program participants.
  • Serves as backup to Direct Support Professional staff as needed.
  • Ensures each individual participates in community-based instruction (CBI), including grocery and supply shopping and other recreational outings.
  • Trains participants in the day program on various life, social, and vocational skills.
  • Drives and accompanies participants to routine and emergency doctor’s appointments, volunteer assignments, and other scheduled community activities and supervises to ensure participant safety.
  • Supports participants with volunteer activity as needed.
  • Shows compassion, builds rapport, and encourages participants to develop into their full potential.
  • Ensures participants are on task and have necessary materials to complete training goals.
  • Coordinates with Residential and other staff throughout Avondale House to coordinate services, goal planning, and to meet the overall needs of each participant in day habilitation.
  • Monitors required documentation completed by staff to ensure compliance and prepares for invoicing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate Avondale House Core Values: Commitment, Achievement, Respect, Integrity, Nurturing, Growth.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Experience working with autistic individuals preferred.
  • Experience working with intellectually disabled individuals required.
  • Patient, authoritative personality.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License and insurability required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to implement non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Lifting/Moving up to 50 lbs and lifting/moving up to 100 lbs or more with assistance.
  • Ability to stand on your feet for 2–3 hours at a time.
  • Stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling may be required in this position.
  • Must be capable of physically restraining clients if necessary.
  • Must be able to handle situations that may be stressful at times.
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
