Databricks Data Solution Architect

Lumenalta · United States · 3 wk ago
RemoteRemoteConsulting$90k–$130k/yrFull-time

About the Role

We partner with global enterprises to design and build large-scale data platforms that power the products and operations at the center of their business. This engagement is a Databricks lakehouse foundation for a US defense manufacturer, establishing Databricks as the central platform for their engineering and manufacturing data. Most of that data is export-controlled, requiring governance to be embedded in the architecture. This is a technical leadership role where you will lead through architecture, technical credibility, and influence, working alongside one senior engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Lead discovery across the client's data, engineering, security, and business teams, documenting data movement, security architecture, integration topology, and platform configuration.
  • Prioritize work by facilitating use case sessions and scoring candidates on business value, technical complexity, and data readiness.
  • Design the target-state Lakehouse architecture, including medallion design, Delta Lake patterns, orchestration, and federate-versus-ingest decisions.
  • Own the Unity Catalog governance blueprint, expressing CUI and ITAR classification as tag-driven policy.
  • Apply FinOps discipline through budget and cluster policies, serverless spend management, and chargeback tagging.
  • Present to enterprise security reviewers and author deliverables such as assessments, architecture documents, and executive readouts.
  • Lead the build, implementing the architecture on AWS, including GovCloud deployment, workspace topology, network isolation, and Unity Catalog governance.
  • Set technical direction for the ingestion engineer, review their work, and unblock them on source system and platform issues.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in solutions architecture, data engineering, or related roles, with multiple production Databricks platform architectures on AWS GovCloud.
  • Experience in regulated or export-controlled environments.
  • Deep, hands-on Unity Catalog expertise, including row filters, column masks, and attribute-based access control.
  • Practical experience translating regulatory requirements (CUI, ITAR) into enforceable data policy.
  • Working knowledge of Delta Lake internals, Lakehouse Federation, Delta Sharing, and Databricks Workflows.
  • Demonstrated ownership of platform cost, including cluster and budget policies and chargeback models.
  • Strong technical writing skills for architecture documents, assessment reports, and executive decks.
  • Experience running structured discovery across large enterprise stakeholder groups.
  • Skilled communicator with the presence to lead technical conversations and align stakeholders.
  • Databricks Data Engineer Professional certification or willingness to obtain it.
  • US citizenship and ability to pass a background check.
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken.

Nice to Have

  • Prior work in defense, aerospace, or FedRAMP environments.
  • Familiarity with digital threat architecture and PLM, MBSE, ERP, and manufacturing data.
  • Experience delivering alongside Databricks Professional Services or as a Databricks partner practitioner.
  • Familiarity with Teamcenter, Cameo, Siemens Capital, or Oracle E-Business Suite data models.
  • Experience integrating AI-native tooling into engineering and discovery workflows.
