Data Visualization Analyst
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) is one of the largest public health agencies in the world, serving 8 million New Yorkers. The agency is embarking on a data modernization initiative to accelerate its data strategy, which includes moving from siloed and brittle public health data systems to connected, resilient, adaptable, and sustainable systems. This initiative supports larger efforts to rebalance investments in public health and more equitably serve communities and populations.
About the role
The agency is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Data Analyst/Data Visualization Analyst to transform raw data into actionable insights. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data to support strategic decision-making across the organization. You will work closely with various teams to understand their data needs and provide them with clear, compelling visualizations and reports.
Responsibilities
- Gather data from various sources, including databases, spreadsheets, and APIs.
- Clean, transform, and validate data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines.
- Understand clients' business processes to better guide them on technology decisions.
- Perform statistical analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
- Develop and implement data models and algorithms.
- Create reports and dashboards to communicate findings to stakeholders.
- Create clear and compelling visualizations that effectively communicate data insights.
- Ensure visualizations are accessible and user-friendly.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their data needs and provide data-driven solutions.
- Communicate complex data findings in a clear and concise manner.
- Present data insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Document data analysis processes and methodologies.
- Maintain data dictionaries and metadata.
- Adhere to data governance and security policies.
Qualifications and requirements
- 2+ years of experience in data analysis or data visualization.
- Proficiency in SQL for data querying and manipulation.
- Experience with Python or R for data analysis and visualization.
- Expertise in data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
- Familiarity with data warehousing and ETL processes.
- A strong communicator.

Additional Information
- This is a temporary grant-funded position ending in November 2027.
- Preference may be given to individuals residing in New York City (5 boroughs) or surrounding New York State counties.
- This individual will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies.
